Saint Benedict the Moor (1526–1589)
Our Patron Saint
Born into slavery in Sicily to African parents, Benedict was freed as a young man and eventually joined a group of hermits living outside Palermo. His deep humility, prayerful spirit, and gift for healing drew people from across the region to seek his counsel.
Despite being unable to read or write, Benedict was appointed guardian and then superior of his Franciscan community — a remarkable testament to the holiness others recognized in him. He was canonized in 1807 and is venerated as the first Black saint of the Americas.
His life reminds us that holiness is not reserved for the powerful or the privileged. He is a patron of those who are marginalized, a model of radical humility, and an inspiration for our parish's commitment to welcome all people.
Our Parish History
St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church was founded to serve the African American Catholic community in our city. From its earliest days, the parish has been a spiritual home for those seeking a place where faith and justice walk hand in hand.
Through decades of growth, the parish has expanded its ministries, deepened its roots in the neighborhood, and remained a beacon of hope and inclusion. Our history is one of perseverance, prayer, and the enduring power of community.
Today, St. Benedict the Moor continues to honor that legacy — welcoming all who seek God, serving those in need, and forming disciples who carry the Gospel into the world.

Parish Administrator
Fr. Yumo serves as Parish Administrator, providing pastoral leadership and sacramental ministry to our community. He is available for pastoral care, sacramental preparation, and spiritual direction.
